Three people are facing animal cruelty charges after nearly 30 dogs were pulled out of a home said to be in deplorable conditions.
The Associated Humane Society says that 27 dogs were taken out of the home on 64th Street Wednesday afternoon. The animals were said to be covered in filth.
The home was condemned by a city inspector.
The dogs were taken to Saint Hubert's Animal Center for evaluation. They are expected to be put up for adoption once they are cleared by health officials.
Veterinarians at Saint Hubert’s say that the dogs must have suffered several years of neglect.
“The dogs look like they were carrying a shaggy old rug…and the bottom of the feet were so hard from the feces and urine drying up on it,” says animal cruelty investigator Geoffrey Santini. “It was horrific, terrible.”
Veterinarians say that some of the dogs will need dental work. Saint Hubert’s is a nonprofit organization. Anyone who wishes to donate money to help the dogs can do so at the organization’s website.
