Police say two people were killed after a luxury car veered off a road, went airborne and crashed into the second floor of a real estate office in Toms River.
The crash happened Sunday around 6:30 a.m. on Hooper Avenue.
According to police, the 2010 Porsche Boxster was traveling northbound at a very high speed when the driver lost control, hit the center median and struck an embankment -- causing the vehicle to become airborne into the Exit Realty building.
Authorities identified the victims as Braden DeMartin, 22, and Daniel Foley, 23. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
People nearby went to see the wreckage and couldn't believe how the car got up to the second floor.
“Horrific, horrible,” says Susan Russell, of Toms River. “It's frightening. Obviously, a couple people passed away, so this is very sad.”
Emergency crews were able to safely remove the car from the building. It took them hours because they had to work up from the basement to the second floor, adding support beams to the building to make sure it was structurally sound.
Hooper Avenue was closed for most of the day Sunday between Indian Hill Road and College Drive, but has since reopened.
Police say the car was not a stolen vehicle.
