The holiday travel season seemed to be winding down Sunday at Newark Liberty International Airport, as travelers returned to New Jersey following weeks of heavy air traffic.
The New Year traditionally marks the end of the busiest travel period of the season. AAA projected more than 8 million people would travel by air nationwide during the holidays, including nearly 200,000 New Jerseyans.
“Surprisingly, we thought this was going to be the really busiest time of the year,” said traveler Jeff Fischer. “But smooth as silk.”
Fischer said the biggest issue of the day might just be the weather.
“We came from Fort Myers, Florida, so it was nice and warm down there,” he said. “A little chillier up here, but still, it’s good to be home.”
While operations were steady Sunday, disruptions impacted Newark Liberty on Saturday. The Federal Aviation Administration ordered airlines to restrict flights to the Caribbean on Saturday following the military operation in Venezuela. The restriction was lifted by Sunday.
“We were a little concerned because we got the alert on our application about the whole Venezuela thing,” said Nick, who was traveling from Florida. “So we checked social media, we were checking the news and ultimately we got the alert that our plane got switched, and it was fine. And we got to our plane without an issue.”
