Dozens gathered in song and ceremony Monday to honor the veterans buried in a historic Jersey City cemetery.
Florence Ibrahim came to pay her respects this Memorial Day at the Jersey City-Harsimus Cemetery. The cemetery is a place where not only generations of Jersey City residents are laid to rest, but also many veterans.
"I said I want to come and pay homage to my family and everybody," Ibrahim says. "And it's not all about barbecues, it's about the people that fought for this country."
There are veterans buried there who served in the Revolutionary War through Desert Storm. Each veteran's grave is identified with a silver marker.
The six-acre property in a meadow off of Newark Avenue fell into disrepair a few years ago. Since then, the cemetery is under new management. Concerts and events are held here to raise the $3,000 a month it costs to maintain it.
