A high school football player died after he was injured in a game in Washington Township Friday night.

Quarterback Evan Murray, a senior at Warren Hills Regional High School, was hurt in a home game at the school. He was alert and talking on the field after the injury, but was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and was pronounced dead.

Details on the nature of Murray's injury were not yet available.

Murray, a star athlete, had been the starting quarterback for the past three seasons. He also played basketball and baseball at the school.

Coaches and teammates are remembering Murray as a devoted athlete and a natural leader.

The school lowered its flag to half-staff Saturday as teammates and other students gathered in mourning, and the school announced it would have grief counselors on hand.

As news of Murray's death spread, a makeshift memorial sprouted on the school grounds.

Words of support for the community and for Murray's family are pouring in from around the state and the country. The New York Jets and Gov. Chris Christie are among those who have expressed their support on Twitter.
