Hermine may have missed landfall in New Jersey, but the storm continues to buffet the coast with rough waves.

Residents in Avon-by-the-Sea say they're expecting a lot more rough water throughout the week, even though the storm is hundreds of miles away.

Hermine intensified in the Gulf of Mexico last week and made landfall as a hurricane in the Florida Panhandle. It later weakened, but forecasters say it is intensifying again as it moves away from the region.

It is expected to move slowly, leaving 8- to 10-foot waves, long period swells, rough surf and rip currents along the Jersey Shore.

Lifeguards have closed beaches to swimming throughout the region for safety.

Dangerous rip currents are expected to remain for most of the week.
