Heavy rain and flash flooding created major travel headaches across parts of Monmouth and Middlesex counties Thursday, leaving drivers stuck in traffic, roads covered in water and police scrambling to direct vehicles around flooded areas.
The rain began shortly before noon and quickly intensified, causing flash flooding in several areas. While the worst of the flooding passed quickly, the impact on traffic lingered for hours.
Emergency alerts warned residents about the dangerous conditions, but some drivers were already caught in the flooding when the warnings arrived.
With additional rain possible, drivers were urged to use caution, avoid flooded roadways and give emergency crews plenty of room to work.
