Thought taking the bus would make for a smoother commute while the NJ Transit Portal Bridge cutover work is underway? Not so fast.

New Jersey bus commuters could face delays for years as construction moves ahead on the new Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City.

“Not good," said commuter Mario, of Cliffside Park. "Once the gas prices go down, I'll start using my car again.”

“I know with traffic, with whatever they're doing with Port Authority, it's going to be worse," said commuter Dhamar Martinez. "One of my buses does go into New York. It's 35 minutes or 40 minutes, depending on the tunnel. That usually just takes forever.”

This is all a part of the new, $11 billion Port Authority Bus Terminal construction. It’s opening in 2035. The current one - 75 years old - is said to be the busiest in the world.

Bus traffic must now take new, temporary routes while the existing ramps are removed.

The Port Authority - and bus lines like NJ Transit and Academy Bus - are telling riders to allot more time for possible delays.

The morning exclusive bus lane uses a different ramp and will stay open. It’s another transportation warning for commuters that are already dealing with four more weeks of reduced train service from the Portal Bridge Cutover.

“If you're going to fix the train, don't do the same thing to the Port Authority because everybody's going to have to derail," said Martinez. "It's a mess.”

Phase one of the Port Authority construction will end in 2030 - with the terminal’s grand opening projected for 2035.e $11 billion project is scheduled for completion in 2035.
