A 54-year-old Hawthorne man has been charged with sexually assaulting an 80-year-old woman who authorities said was physically helpless.
John Schweininger was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault and third-degree aggravated criminal sexual contact.
Hawthorne police learned around 11:15 p.m. Saturday that Schweininger had allegedly engaged in nonconsensual sexual acts with the woman, who prosecutors said was physically helpless due to her infirmities. Authorities said the woman was a member of Schweininger’s household.
The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and Hawthorne police investigated the case. Authorities obtained an arrest warrant, and Schweininger was arrested without incident around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday near Mountain Avenue and Lewis Street in Haledon, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors have asked a judge to keep Schweininger jailed while the case is pending.
