A Hackensack man has been charged with home invasion burglary, attempted aggravated sexual assault and aggravated assault after authorities said he broke into a home and attacked a sleeping resident early Saturday.
Jermin Fordyce, 36, of Hackensack, was arrested March 21 following a joint investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hackensack Police Department, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor.
Police responded at approximately 3:40 a.m. to a private residence on a report of a home invasion burglary. Upon arrival, officers found Fordyce subdued by residents, who held him for police after discovering him inside a bedroom, authorities said.
Fordyce, who was not related to anyone in the home, was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during an altercation with residents, officials said.
Investigators determined that Fordyce allegedly entered the residence by climbing through a bathroom window. Once inside, he entered a bedroom, climbed on top of a sleeping victim while removing his pants and attempted to sexually assault her, authorities said. During the attack, he allegedly strangled the victim.
Other residents awoke to the sounds of the struggle and captured Fordyce, officials said.
Fordyce was charged with home invasion burglary, attempted aggravated sexual assault and aggravated assault. He was remanded pending a detention hearing in Bergen County Superior Court.
