Police in Elizabeth opened fire and apparently shot a dog during the pursuit of a suspect on Fulton Street Wednesday.
Witnesses say the man took off running as police approached. They say a dog belonging to a resident ran toward the officers during the pursuit and was fatally shot by police. Robert Hawkins, the owner of the dog, says police told him they shot his 14-year-old pit bull-boxer mix because they felt threatened. Police were able to take the suspect into custody.
The shooting marks the third time in as many days shots have been fired in a three-block radius of Fulton Street. Earlier Wednesday, residents say the gunfire broke out at a home in the same area around 5 a.m. Several bullets went through the glass at the home and sources say some also went through the stucco. Officials say at least one person inside the home was injured.
A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed in the area earlier in the week. Police are continuing to hunt for the killer of 13-year-old Elijah Henderson. Henderson was riding bikes with two other boys Monday when he was fatally shot. Surveillance video shows a man shooting Henderson and then fleeing the scene. One of the other boys was also shot, but is expected to survive.Related information:Manhunt intensifies for gunman in Elizabeth slayingMasked gunman opens fire on Elizabeth children
