Reports of firearms led police to keep students at South Plainfield High School under lockdown for hours Friday.
Piscataway police officers and cops from five surrounding jurisdictions conducted a search of classrooms, lockers and backpacks. The search was instigated by reports of handguns on school property.
The lockdown followed the arrest of two students by Piscataway police a day earlier. One of those arrests was the result of an alleged assault on a police officer.
Parents were upset at the lack of information distributed during the lockdown. Administrators defended the practice, saying they did not want unsubstantiated rumors spreading.
"Until you can make sure that you can make an accurate statement, don't you think it would be absurd to put something out that wouldn't be accurate?" asked Deputy Superintendent Dr. Robert Rosato.
