Members of a Latino group were in Morristown Wednesday to release their findings on the immigration system and to blast the town on its plan to crackdown on illegal immigrants.
The Latino Leadership Alliance held nothing back when it came to discussing Morristown Mayor Donald Cresitello?s plans to deputize police officers as immigration agents. The group chose the town as its second stop to release its report ?On the Verge of Crisis: The Broken Immigration System.? It used Morristown as an example of what not to do when it comes to reforming immigration.
?This is a new form of ethnic cleansing in America. And for the decent people of this country and for the country that defends the basis of our constitution this is abhorrent,? said Latino Leadership Alliance member Martin Perez.
?This is an overreaction here from people who are illegal and have a financial interest in hiring illegals?if people are illegal don?t come to Morristown,? Cresitello said, in response to the group?s findings.
The plan to deputize police officers is still waiting for federal government approval.
Meanwhile, the group is pushing for Governor Jon Corzine to sign an executive order guaranteeing New Jersey will not discriminate against children of undocumented families.
