A state grand jury declined to file criminal charges in a deadly police-involved shooting in Fort Lee.
The shooting took place on Feb. 4, 2023. Officials say that family members called 911 to report that 42-year-old Mohamed Bounaouar, of Las Vegas, was inside their home with a knife and acting aggressively.
Police entered the John Street home and attempted to speak with Bounaouar. Officials say that Bounaouar later went onto the second-floor balcony and then moved toward a group of officers while holding the knife. The officers tased and shot Bounaouar.
Officials say that the officers ordered Bounaouar to drop the knife, but he got up and lunged toward a second group of officers. Bounaouar was shot again and died at the scene.
