State police currently serve municipalities that are too small to have their own police department. Governor Jon Corzine (D-NJ) believes the state would save over $20 billion each year if those towns started paying up. Mayor Nanette Courtine (D-Victory Gardens) says New Jersey would bill the town?s 1,800 residents more than $300 annually.
Assemblyman Richard A. Merkt (R-Morris) says he wants Corzine to refer to the charter written when the state police force was created. It says the agency?s purpose is to provide law enforcement where there is none.
