Gov. Phil Murphy has signed an executive order to keep all name changes confidential.
It comes during Transgender Awareness Week. The measure is meant to protect the privacy of those who legally change their names.
“A person’s name change can be a critical step in gender transition or affirmation of their gender identity, but many who wish to change their name have legitimate safety and privacy concerns with maintaining legal records of their name change,” the governor wrote in a statement.
The order also waives the fee that comes with making a name change.
