Gov. Phil Murphy has signed two bills that state leaders hope will thin out the long lines at Motor Vehicle Commission offices around New Jersey.
Republicans said Gov. Murphy had to sign the bills to help the congestion.
The two measures extend the validity of expiring driver's licenses and ID cards, as well as allow more time for drivers moving from out of state to get New Jersey drivers' licenses and register vehicles.
The governor released a statement, which read in part read, “This legislation will reduce wait times and allow our vulnerable populations to have the access they need to obtain critical services."
State Sen. Declan O'Scanlon, who has been an outspoken critic of how the governor handled the long lines at the MVC, tweeted Thursday night, saying, "Worked like a charm."
Sen. O'Scanlon and Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso said waiting in the lines is unnecessary. Sen. O'Scanlon said of Gov. Murphy, "He could have signed them and provided immediate benefit to many New Jersey drivers. Murphy has dragged this out for almost two weeks. His reluctance to take action is puzzling, and every resident waiting in a line to renew a license or register a title is paying the price in wasted time and lost productivity."
