Gov. Kathy Hochul and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced new safety measures to combat the uptick in subway crime in New York City.

City officials say the city has seen a 75% spike in transit crimes in the Bronx so far this year compared to the same period last year. Citywide crime in the subway is up by 13% so far this year.

The NYPD reported that subway crime was down across the city compared to last February, but transit crime was still up by more than 30% for the month in the Bronx.

That spike has mostly came from two deadly shootings just weeks apart at the 182-183rd Street station and at the Mount Eden station.

In addition, Mayor Eric Adams says the city will be reinstituting bag checks at certain stations across the city in the hopes to catch people carrying weapons.

The NYPD says it added about 1,000 more officers across the transit system and the governor reiterated her plan to add two cameras inside each subway car. Some transit advocates say that's still not enough to make people feel safe.

Gov. Kathy Hochul says the state will deploy the National Guard and state police to subways to combat the rise in crime.
