A New Jersey congressman is pushing the nation to put sanction on Brazil in response to the numerous snags a Tinton Falls man has hit in his battle to regain custody of his son.
Rep. Chris Smith introduced a bill Thursday that would temporarily remove Brazil from a duty-free trade program. According to Smith, Brazil received $2.75 billion in benefits last year.
Smith's legislation follows the latest setback for David Goldman, who is trying to regain custody of his 9-year-old son Sean. Goldman's son was taken by his mother to Brazil in 2004 on vacation. She then divorced him and never returned, ultimately dying a year ago during childbirth. A federal court had finally agreed to relinquish custody to Goldman this week, but Brazil's supreme court suspended that decision in light of an appeal.
Smith says he will push for his bill until Brazil honors a treaty dealing with international child abductions.
