U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez was convicted Tuesday on 16 counts of bribery in his federal corruption trial.
Union City is Menendez's hometown and it's also where he got his political start, working as part of the Union City Board of Education and then becoming mayor of the city in the mid-80s.
Some Union City residents were upset to hear that someone they trusted was found guilty on all counts in a federal corruption trial. Many are now calling on the senator to resign.
"You know there's too many politicians in the state that have been getting away with this stuff for so long and it's about time somebody went down and I hope he goes down to the fullest extent of the law. He should resign immediately, drop his appeal,” said Christopher, a Union City resident. “This is the second time, second trial correct? Got away with a mistrial, and got convicted on all accounts today. Hang it up, buddy.”
"Get rid of him. He's such a thief,” said one constituent.
"He committed the crimes; he has to resign," said a Union City resident.
"I always liked him. I even voted for him and everything, but…if he really made those mistakes I mean those crimes whatever gotta make justice. Gotta pay the price," said a man who previously voted for Menedez.
The one thing News 12 heard from just about everyone is that no one, not even politicians, is above the law.
