A gay rights group is planning to protest a Monmouth County school district?s decision to reject a high school play.
The movie ?The Laramie Project? is based on the true story of Matthew Shepard, who was beaten to death in Laramie, Wyoming nine years ago because he was gay. The film is used as a tool in schools nationwide to teach tolerance. It is shown in classrooms with a discussion before and after.
Ocean Township High School?s Drama Department wants to perform the stage version of the film. However, Superintendent of Schools Thomas Pagano says the play would be inappropriate for the community because of the violence.
The head of a gay rights group, Garden State Equality, says, ?The district can expect a firestorm headed their way if it doesn?t reverse its decision.?
Pagano says he has no plans to change or budge from his decision. The issue will be discussed at the next public board meeting August 28. The drama coach is expected to speak at that time. Garden State Equality plans to protest at the meeting.
