Rep. Bill Pascrell visited Garfield High School Tuesday to talk about the dangers head injuries can cause student athletes.
The congressman's visit comes just a few weeks ahead of a new movie starring Will Smith that focuses on two NFL players who committed suicide after suffering from concussions during their careers.
"All you have to do is look at the NFL and how they swept it under the rug and are trying frantically to keep up those football players who are now vegetables," says Rep. Pascrell.
Rep. Pascrell helped pass the Contact Act, which provides resources for schools to help deal with student athlete brain injuries.
Dr. Grant Baldwin says, "We need to build a culture in sports where athletes are encouraged by coaches to report a concussion regardless how important that game is."
The Garfield School District agrees and has taken proactive measures to protect student athletes.
