The Federal Trade Commission is investigating how major companies use artificial intelligence and consumers’ personal data to set prices and determine worker compensation.
Delta, United, JetBlue, Lyft, Uber, DoorDash, Instacart, Target and Walmart are among the companies named in the FTC’s personalized pricing investigation.
The agency is seeking information about how these businesses use consumer data, to determine what customers pay for products and services.
For consumers like Jasmine Edwards, the possibility of being charged different prices based on their online activity raises concerns.
“If I'm on my phone and I'm looking for a plane ticket or something like that, which I do constantly, right? I like to travel, and you're gonna charge me a different price every time I look? That's ridiculous," she says.
The FTC says companies that fail to provide the requested information could be required to answer questions in federal court.
