New Jersey American Water officials are issuing warnings to homeowners about how to take on the cold and avoid the cost of broken-pipe repairs.
One of the primary things to do is to check sprinkler systems, if you have them, to make sure they're switched off and drained.
If there are pipes in your home that are more likely to become cold, they can be wrapped with insulation, newspaper or even a towel.
One thing you should never do to warm a frozen pipe is to use open flames. Hair dryers are a much safer and still effective alternative.
