A retired Haddonfield police officer has been charged with sexually assaulting an underage girl in Burlington County, authorities announced Friday.

Louis J. Baselice, 67, of Maple Shade, is charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office and Maple Shade Police Department.

Baselice was taken into custody Tuesday at the Maple Shade Police Department and lodged in the Burlington County Jail in Mount Holly, where he is awaiting a detention hearing in Superior Court. The case will be presented to a grand jury for possible indictment.

Authorities said the investigation began after acquaintances of the victim reported the alleged abuse to law enforcement. Investigators determined Baselice purchased an electric scooter, a cellphone and other items for the teenage girl, and provided her with his credit card number so she could order food.

Prosecutors said additional details are being withheld to protect the victim's identity.

In a statement, the Haddonfield Police Department said Baselice served as a school resource officer from 2005 to 2009 and has not been employed by the department for more than a decade. The department said Baselice has no current connection with the agency and that it received no complaints or reports of wrongdoing during his tenure.
