Many NJ Transit riders are back to finding alternate ways into Manhattan following the Monday holiday. Work to finish the Portal North Bridge is now underway and is expected to continue for the next five weeks.

The project means riders who normally travel directly into the city will once again need to use other options, including PATH trains, buses and ferries, just as they did during similar disruptions in the spring.

"I wanna be crystal clear on this. Our job is to try and finish this thing in five weeks, just like we did the first Portal cut over. If there is a delay, it'll be because of safety issues, weather issues or other things that are outside our control. And as always, I'm gonna be the first person to communicate that," said Kris Kolluri, president of NJ Transit.

The work includes moving the final track, along with overhead wires and other equipment.

Once complete, it will mark the end of the 116-year-old Portal swing bridge, which has been responsible for countless delays over the years.

The project is expected to be completed by Nov. 15.
