A Woodbridge firefighter from the Hopelawn Volunteer Firefighter Department died today after suffering a heart attack while battling a blaze at a house fire in the Iselin section of Woodbridge. A person inside the house also died, officials say.
The firefighter was taken to JFK Medical Center in Edison, where he died. He has been identified as ex-chief Bruce Turcotte, 58.
Capt. Joseph Heintjis of Hopelawn Engine Co. No. 1 tells News 12 New Jersey that this is the first time the fire department has experienced a line-of-duty death.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office is handling the investigation and says the house was in foreclosure, and that the occupants had refused to leave. The home was listed as belonging to Robert Ness and another man.
