A fire forced more than 100 senior citizens at a Newark apartment complex to be evacuated Thursday.
The blaze broke out around 1 a.m. at the Seth Boyden housing complex and officials say it was not an easy fire to battle. Firefighters say that because it was an electrical fire, they had to wait for the electric company before battling the blaze. Officials say the smoke alarms went off early and they were able to respond within three minutes. They say their first move was getting everyone out of the building.
Some of those evacuated were taken to Dayton Street School, which is about one block from the complex. The Red Cross is helping people get through the day and make future plans since it will be a while before they can return to the complex.
Officials say none of the residents or firefighters were injured in the blaze, but eight people were taken to the hospital for observation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
