Fire officials say a four-alarm fire broke out at an East Orange warehouse located on Park Avenue and North 17th Street Wednesday evening.
The warehouse was built almost 90 years ago and has been occupied by United States Fabric Services since 1997. According to Moses Lopez, a textile finisher, the fire started when a piece of smoldering metal fell into a pile of pallets inside the warehouse.
"I was cutting some metal [and] it was melting,? Lopez says. ?Some piece hit the ground. It landed on my boot and I felt my boot on fire, and I kicked it, and because I was wearing my goggles I didn't see where I kicked it. I guess I kicked it towards the pallets and that was it."
The fire progressed into a four-alarm blaze in less than two hours. Firefighters originally experienced difficulty extinguishing the flames, as hydrants and pumps were failing to work. The fire burned for nearly five hours. Companies from Irvington, Millburn, East Orange and Newark were needed to put out the flames.
There were no injuries. The owner of the warehouse, Steve Feingold, says he will rebuild.
