The FDNY battled a two-alarm fire early this morning at a Melrose furniture store.
Authorities say they got a call after 3 a.m. for a garbage fire outside of Palace Gates Furniture at 2939 Third Ave.
The fire escalated to a second alarm as it spread into the first floor of the building. The FDNY called in more crews to help.
Firefighters got the fire under control after 5:30 a.m. Two firefighters were hospitalized for their injuries.
Haj Nofal, the owner of Palace Gates Furniture, says he was woken up by calls from neighbors about the fire and drove from Yonkers to the scene.
Nofal says fire crews had to break through the walls of his store to put out the fire and there was water damage. He says he’s not sure how long it will be until he can reopen.
Con Edison shut off the gas and electricity for the store as well.
The store was closed at the time of the fire.
There is no word on the cause.
