A source has come forward identifying the suspected shooter who killed an Uber driver as a Bronx resident in his early 20s who immigrated from the Dominican Republic.
The source says he was present the night of the shooting and later went to police with the name and photos of the person he believes is responsible.
“I was nearby… we were able to identify the person by the pictures,” the source said.
The source’s remarks were translated by New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers spokesperson Fernando Mateo. According to the source, the suspected shooter had just left a bar in the Mott Haven area when he noticed damage to his car parked outside. The source says the man then pulled out a gun and began firing.
Uber driver Isa Mbolo Isaac, 55, was driving by when he was shot and killed. Isaac was a father of four who had just finished his shift at the time of the shooting.
The shooting has sparked renewed concerns about safety for rideshare drivers. Residents say more protections are needed.
“Uber drivers definitely need the Uber company to really start a different plan for them,” said resident Edsel Perez. “Know everything that’s going on around their surroundings.”
The source also claims the suspect may be attempting to flee the country and return to the Dominican Republic. Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
