A 47-year-old man was fatally shot in the head in Paterson overnight, according to city officials.
Officials say this latest deadly incident happened at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Summer Street. It is the latest in a string of violent incidents in the city, including the stabbing attack of a 5-year-old girl allegedly by her grandmother.
“This has been a very disturbing week. One of the most violent weeks in recent memory,” said Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh. “Last night our fifth homicide. Over the course of the past week, there’s been even more people shot.”
The violence comes as New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin insists crime is down in Paterson compared to the year before. The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General took over the Paterson Police Department earlier this year.
“Our work will continue undeterred with the sole focus on ensuring public safety for the residents of Paterson and building a first-class law enforcement agency about which Paterson can be proud,” a spokesperson for Platkin wrote in a statement.
Several high-ranking members of Paterson's police department sued the attorney general earlier this week, alleging that the attorney general cannot take over a city’s police department.
Platkin called the lawsuit “meritless.”
