Family members of the Bronx woman who was fatally shot in Bedford Park over the weekend say she was in an abusive relationship with the man who has been charged in her killing.

Saida Bonilla, 40, was shot and killed in her Bronx home early Saturday morning on E. 203rd St. Near Valentine Ave. Her two nephews, a 16-year-old and 9-year-old were also injured in the shooting and are currently in stable condition.

Rosvin Mejia Castillo, 37, was arrested and faces multiple charges including murder, attempted murder, assault, attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.

Family members say Castillo was abusive and isolated her from the family.

“Often [abusers] isolate [victims] and control them to an extent that it is psychological manipulation and there is a lot of emotional abuse, and it tarnishes their self-esteem,” said Karina Aybar, a psychotherapist from the Bronx and domestic violence advocate.

According to city data, the Bronx has the highest number of domestic violence homicides of any borough.
