A man was killed in Passaic when he was struck by a falling tree during a fast-moving storm.
Authorities say the man was sitting inside a tent in a backyard of the home, celebrating Mother's Day with family and friends, when a lightning strike cracked the tree in half, causing it to come crashing down.
Several other people inside the tent were injured. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.
One witness tells News 12 neighbors tried unsuccessfully to free the man, who was trapped under the weight of the tree.
The witness says firemen freed the man once they arrived, but he did not survive his injuries.
Passaic Mayor Hector Lora tells News 12 the victim's wife, who was injured in the incident, is in stable condition.
The man's identity has not been released.
