Multiple suspects fled in two stolen vehicles after a residential burglary early Sunday in Fairfield, according to police.
Officials say they received a license plate reader alert at about 6:37 a.m. that a stolen white 2022 BMW X7 had entered the township.
The BMW, displaying only a rear license plate, had been reported stolen March 15 in Clifton and was believed to be linked to recent home burglaries in Edison and Franklin Lakes, according to police.
Officers found the BMW X7 on Farmstead Lane, but the driver jumped a curb and drove across a lawn to evade police, causing minor damage to a patrol car.
Two suspects were seen running to a silver BMW X5 parked in a driveway. They got into the vehicle and fled.
Officers pursued both vehicles but ended the chase after losing sight of them on Route 280 east.
Investigators said the suspects entered the home through an unlocked rear sliding door, and the keys to the BMW X5 were left in the kitchen.
No injuries were reported, and the homeowners did not know the suspects were inside during the burglary.
