DNA experts took the stand Monday as the murder trial of Paul Caneiro resumed in Freehold.
Caneiro is accused of murdering his brother, Keith Caneiro, and Keith's family back in November 2018.
Scientists told jurors that DNA evidence of Keith's children - Sophia and Jess - was recovered in a frozen pile inside the Ocean Township home of Paul Caneiro.
Monday’s testimony began with New Jersey State Police Forensic DNA expert Allison Lane, who told the jury a number of items taken from the much-talked-about frozen pile of semi-burned clothes in Paul's basement tested positive for biological remains. The pair of jeans tested positive in five different areas.
Further analysis of the pile, including the jeans was provided by Chris Szymkowiak, a New Jersey State Police forensic scientist.
“That was a portion staining right front thigh area jeans...Sophia Caneiro is identified as a source of the STR profile obtained,” said Szymkowiak.
Tests performed on a portion of the glove from the pile showed “assuming two contributors, Sophia Caneiro is identified as a source of the interpreted major STR DNA profile,” added Szymkowiak.
NJSP Forensic Scientist Christine Schlenker testified that a sample of the jeans was retested, using a computer program called STRmix, which revealed additional DNA.
“Jesse Caneiro is identified as a source of STR DNA profile of Unknown Male A,” she told jurors.
Testimony resumes at 8:30 a.m.
