(AP) - Former New Jersey state Sen. Joseph Conigliohas been sentenced to 30 months in prison for using his influenceto steer state funds to a hospital where he also served as aconsultant.
The Paramus Democrat was convicted April 17 of mail fraud andextortion.
Prosecutors had sought a sentence of more than six years.
The former plumber served in the state Senate from 2002 to 2007and was a member of the powerful Senate Budget Committee.
He was found guilty of one count of extortion and five counts ofmail fraud. He was acquitted on two other counts of mail fraud andthe jury deadlocked on a final mail fraud count.
U.S. District Judge Dennis M. Cavanaugh handed down the sentencein Newark federal court Tuesday.
