Health care workers in Essex County received the first doses of Moderna's coronavirus vaccine today at Essex County Community College in Newark.
Essex County has been the state's worst hit area by the coronavirus so those who were able to be vaccinated were excited for the opportunity.
"This was something that was important to me, so I have to be safe and I have to be an example," says Bonnie Rogers, a school nurses at West Caldwell School of Technology.
The county has received 10,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine, which will be enough for health care workers for the next two weeks, and then another shipment is expected.
After health care workers are inoculated, those in long-term care facilities will be vaccinated.
Essex County has set up five vaccination centers. Residents will be able to make an appointment online or by calling when it is their turn to be vaccinated.
Officials say at least 70% of residents will have to be vaccinated to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
The vaccine is free for all residents.
