Environmentalists call for stop to offshore drilling off New Jersey’s coast
Environmental advocates were in Belmar Monday to call for an end to offshore oil drilling.
Members of Clean Ocean Action say that they are opposed to President Donald Trump’s executive order that takes the first steps toward allowing offshore drilling along the New Jersey coastline.
Advocates say New Jersey's entire bipartisan delegation has come out against the order.
“It makes no sense to drill in an ocean, which may get a few jobs, when so many hundreds of thousands of jobs depend on a clean and healthy ocean,” says Clean Ocean Action executive director Cindy Zipf. “There are more jobs on a clean and healthy ocean economy than there are in an oily ocean economy.”
Lawmakers in New Jersey are now sponsoring legislation that would ban offshore drilling in the Atlantic Ocean.
