‘Enough is enough.’ Gov. Phil Murphy calls for cellphone ban in all K-12 classrooms

The governor made the remarks in Tuesday’s State of the State address.
“Our children are inundated with screens, and if you ask just about any educator, they will tell you that mobile devices are a distraction in the classroom,” Murphy said.

He said that the devices make it difficult for students to learn and retain the substance of what they learn.
“Honestly, is it any surprise that the rise in smartphone usage has coincided with a growing youth mental health crisis?” Murphy said.
The governor then announced his support for a new proposal that “will direct school districts across New Jersey to adopt policies that ban cellphones from our K-12 classrooms and help establish phone-free schools.”
Ramsey High School began its ban on students having cellphones in school on Jan. 6. Students had to lock up their cellphones, smartwatches and earbuds before class in special bags.
