An Egg Harbor Township man was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years in state prison in the 2023 shooting death of his girlfriend, authorities said.

Kevin Dorsey, 53, received the sentence from Superior Court Judge Ralph Paolone in Atlantic County.

Police responded to a 911 call on Oct. 26, 2023, at a residence on Zion Road, where they found Charlena Burnett suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said. She was later pronounced dead.

An investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit found that Dorsey shot Burnett multiple times inside their shared bedroom. Authorities recovered the revolver used in the shooting, the prosecutor stated.

Dorsey, who was prohibited from possessing firearms, admitted he had purchased the weapon illegally the year before and used it to kill Burnett.

He was sentenced to an extended term of 20 years with 10 years of parole ineligibility on a charge of certain persons not to possess a firearm. He also received a concurrent 17-year sentence for aggravated manslaughter, requiring him to serve 85% of that term before becoming eligible for parole.

Dorsey has been held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility since his arrest on the day of the shooting.
