A hiring and promotion celebration for the Edison Fire Department had an historic twist this year.

Stephanie Kirkpatrick and Cynthia Lewitter are the first female firefighters to be sworn-in in the history of the department.

Mayor Sam Joshi said at the event that "Edison is now safer."

Officials say the new hires are part of the township's commitment to public safety and first responders.
