A pair of Edgewater firefighters rescued two teenagers who became trapped inside an abandoned rail tunnel that became flooded.
The tunnel is a popular spot for urban explorers. Authorities say that two 14-year-olds entered the tunnel located off River Road Sunday afternoon.
The tunnel is known to locals as “Devil’s Hole.” It is a mile-long abandoned rail tunnel that once belonged to the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad. It hasn't been in use since 1960.
It was Edgewater firefighters Thomas Quinton and Robert Jacobson who put on their cold-water gear, grabbed a boat and went inside to find the teens.
"We walked it into a certain point and then it did get deep to the point where we had to swim pulling the boat,” says Jacobson. “I’m 5 feet, 7 inches and I couldn’t touch the bottom.”
Jacobson says they were yelling to the boys to find their location.
“We didn’t want them to try to swim to us. They could get themselves into trouble,” says Jacobson.
The firefighters soon found the teens about 350 feet inside the tunnel sitting on a fiber optic pipe. But of them were soaking wet.
"The water level was almost to the bottom of the pipe, so they were able to sit on a 12-inch pipe, but still, legs were in the water."
Officials say that the teens were exploring the site, which has become a popular “Weird New Jersey” attraction. It is said to be the only rail tunnel ever built under a cemetery. The other end of the tunnel leads into the property of the Fairview Cemetery, which is where the teens entered.
Quinton says that the boys seemed to have learned their lesson.
"When we got closer to them, we said, ‘Are you going to do this again?’ and they looked us and sheepishly said, ‘No we are not going to do this again,’” Quinton says.
Quinton says he asked the two boys if their parents knew what they were doing. He says they both went silent.
