Two crashes on consecutive days are creating a traffic nightmare in Clifton, where Route 3 has been the scene of major delays.
Thursday morning’s trouble began around 5:30 a.m. when a dump truck overturned near Main Street, spilling gravel across the eastbound lanes by the Clifton Commons shopping center, according to state police.
All eastbound lanes west of Main Street were shut down for hours as crews worked to upright the truck and clear the debris. Westbound traffic also slowed as drivers passed the scene.
Drone footage showed gravel scattered across the roadway. The driver was already out of the vehicle when police arrived and was not injured. One eastbound lanes reopened after the cleanup was completed.
While that crash has been cleared, only the shoulder of eastbound Route 3 will remain open until tomorrow night, due to milling and repaving work following a grease spill that happened on Wednesday.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation notified the City of Clifton that earlier power washing efforts failed, and traffic will be limited to the far-left shoulder.
It is unknown if the two incidents are related.
