Dozens of students were detained and ordered to undergo blood and urine testing after a can of beer was discovered at a New Jersey high school football game.
Randolph Superintendent Jennifer Fano said in a letter that an opened can of beer was found Friday night near a student section of the bleachers at Randolph High School.
The letter also stated that the school’s head of security reported that the student section also smelled strongly of alcohol and that several students appeared to be intoxicated.
School officials were also provided with photos and videos of students consuming alcohol at a house party prior to the game, according to the letter.
Dozens of students were pulled from the stands and their parents were called to have them screened for alcohol. Students who refused the screening would face suspension under school district policy.
Fano apologized to the students who tested negative, but stated that she stands by the decision of staff to take action at the game.
“Teenage drug and alcohol abuse is a national epidemic and Randolph is certainly not exempt from the problem,” Fano stated in the letter.
Fano says the school board would pay for the cost of testing for those students.
Less than five students tested positive for alcohol, according to DailyRecord.com.
