While Dollar General has announced it is set to close nearly 100 of its locations, it also announced that it's adding 575 new stores nationwide.
Dollar General has 175 stores in New Jersey. The list of stores set to close hasn’t been released yet, but the company plans to shut down 96 stores by 2026.
Dollar General is the latest retailer to announce store closings. The company recently released its fourth-quarter earnings. The company is also set to close 45 of its pOpshelf stores, which is a craft goods and home décor business owned by Dollar General. The only one in New Jersey is located in Phillipsburg.
An additional six of its pOpshelf stores will be converted to Dollar General stores.
According to the company’s fourth-quarter earnings report, stores set to be closed or re-bannered were selected based on performance, expected future performance, operating conditions and several other factors.
Some New Jersey shoppers told News 12 they hope their closest Dollar General locations stick around not just for the convenience, but because it also helps them save some money.
“For me and the economy right now, Dollar General is the best option for people who are limited on money who really can’t afford groceries and that is a big issue nowadays with the economy. We really need these stores to stay open,” says Kathy Hockenjos, of West Long Branch.
