New Jersey physicians are warning residents to be safe while using fireworks over the Independence Day weekend.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says fireworks caused nearly 11,000 injuries in 2015 with 1,300 of those affecting eyes.
Doctors say that most July 4th injuries involve backyard firecrackers and sparklers. They say the wounds can lead to infection or loss of vision.
To ensure eye safety, experts suggest wearing goggles or to just leave the fireworks to professionals. They also say that those who do injure themselves should avoid touching their eyes and head straight to an emergency room.
