A jersey number means everything to a pro athlete, but it also means something to some young hockey fans in Newark.
Devils Forward Timo Meier met with kids in the Hockey in New Jersey program on Wednesday to make sure the next generation can play for free.
Meier, who wears number 28, matched 28% of the jersey sales of number 28 for the first two weeks of the season, equating to $10,000 for future hockey stars.
"Number 28, I've kind of had it my whole life. It's brought me luck, so I just wanted to stick with it," Meier said.
The Devils traded for Meier on Feb. 26, who wore number 96 at the time.
