Democrat Mikie Sherrill has defeated Republican Jay Webber in the District 11 Congressional race.
Webber conceded the race to Sherrill just before 10 p.m. Tuesday.
Sherrill replaces longtime Republican Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, who announced his retirement. It is the first time that the 11th District has voted a Democrat into Congress in years.
Sherrill is a former Navy pilot who now joins Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman as the second woman to represent New Jersey in Congress.
Political pundits have said that if Sherrill won the race, it could be the seat Democrats need to take back the House.
