The state Assembly passed a bill abolishing the death penalty in New Jersey Thursday.
Legislators debated the decision for about 2 ½ hours before voting. The move comes days after the state Senate narrowly approved the legislation as well.
Gov. Jon Corzine has already stated he plans to sign the bill once it crosses his desk.
Life without parole will replace the death penalty as the state's stiffest penalty for murderers if and when the bill becomes law.
